I wasn't expecting much from this book, but have been pleasantly surprised. It offers a comprehensive look at all the types of insurance that most individuals need. The book is packed full of helpful information, tips, and recommendations without being overwhelming. There are many examples of major gaps in insurance coverage that can be easily fixed at little or no cost. I found myself flagging and highlighting most pages. I'll be going through all of my insurance coverage to make sure it is up to task. I thought I was reasonably knowledgeable about most types of insurance, but there is an awful lot of information here that I did not know. The author comes through as an experienced, knowledgeable insurance professional who is on your side.
This book is one of the most essential books that I have ever read. Many people will at some point suffer financially as a result of not being aware of essential insurance know-how that this book reveals.One of my favorite aspects of this book is its thorough coverage of such a wide range of insurance coverage...auto, homeowners, health, disability, and life. Another of my favorite aspects is that it walks you through the process of finding a top insurance agent (for a comparable price to a regular agent).Do not read this book if you are easily overwhelmed by detail. Reading the entire book can be intimidating, even for those who consider themselves educated in basic insurance information. I would recommend completing the book once and referencing it throughout your life as the needs arise...meaning...be aware that they will arise. As you read through the book, keep an index on the inside front cover with the page numbers of information you think may apply to you later.I personally am reading the book a second time. Before opening this book I knew maybe 2 or 3 basic facts about the world of insurance. Period. After sharing my recently learned insurance info, someone told me that I needed to go into the business of helping people with their insurance. I had only read the book 1.5 times!
I am a Public Claims Adjuster, and bought the book to see what Jack would say about insurance in general and claims specifically. Agents and other adjusters are on the side of the insurance companies. Public Adjusters only represent the policyholders, and assist them in calculating and submitting their claims. Characteristically, when a policyholder uses a PA, he collects significantly more money than if he allows the insurance company to calculate the claim for him.Jack does a masterful job explaining the proper ways of analyzing risk and buying insurance. You can't go wrong with his recommendations on coverage and buying insurance. BUY THIS BOOK!Russell D. This title is well worth searching out if you're thinking of purchasing new coverage or if it's been a long time since you've reviewed your current coverage. There's a lot more to insurance than most realize, and this book can help make things a lot clearer, save you money, and prevent nasty surprises down the road. Note that the edition available in Canada, of which I own a copy, appears to be identical to the American one in all respects.
I keep this on my desk as my go to for explanations to give my clients.
I thought this book would give objective advice on how much insurance someone should buy. It told me a few things I didn't know but I wouldn't have paid the price for the book for two or three pages of useful advice.
This book is worth its weight in gold. I originally picked it up while doing research on life insurance options. But after reading the first chapter on auto insurance, we called our agent, raised our libability limits and deductibles, got rid of unnecessary coverage and ended up saving ourselves $250 a year! The author, who has worked in the insurance industry for years, makes things plain and simple and illustrates his points with easy-to-understand charts. Now I feel like we actually have a clue about what we're buying, and I feel much more secure knowing we'll likely be well covered in the event of a catastrophe. This should be on every homeowner's bookshelf.
This was very helpful when my parents passed away and I was left to sort through their finances.
