Review

“Lesley Gill has produced an in-depth exposé of the militaristic mentality, socioethnic tensions, and outrageous atrocities of the empire’s Praetorian Guard. Insightful and richly researched, a work of superior quality.”—Michael Parenti, author of The Terrorism Trap and The Assassination of Julius Caesar“Lesley Gill’s study of the premier military training operation in the Americas is a treasure trove of histories that will provoke a long overdue debate about the values and limits of U.S. engagement in the region.”—Robin Kirk, author of More Terrible Than Death: Massacres, Drugs, and America’s War in Colombia"[I]n the wake of recent revelations that suspected terrorists captured by CIA and U.S. special forces in Afghanistan and Iraq have been deliberately hidden from the Red Cross, severely tortured and in some cases abused to death, this book remains immediately relevant. The questions at the heart of the controversy over the school -- is the U.S. military teaching the art of atrocity to Latin American soldiers, and do Americans bear responsibility for the horrors that many of the supposedly 'professionalized' graduates of the school have committed? -- take on new meaning as the United States engages in actions that bear a damning resemblance to the dirty wars fought in years past in Central and South America." (Peter Kornbluh Washington Post Book World)“This book is a hugely impressive, detailed, and fascinating cultural history of jazz in Britain and should be recommended not only to cultural historians but also to historians of the Cold War, the British Left, and those interested in race relations and national identity in twentieth-century Britain.” (James J. Nott American Historical Review)"Gill was able to examine the school's folkways and rhetoric, thanks to glasnost-like levels of administrative cooperation. Lessons in thinking in terms of how to 'kill and maim' opposition and to 'dehumanize' those who persist. Gill then traces the paths of various graduates of the school and links their activities directly to the torture and death of 'Latin American peasants, workers, students [and] human rights activists'--i.e., 'opposition.' " (Publishers Weekly)“The notion of impunity which Lesley Gill develops with many insights has far-reaching ramifications and consequences. . . . Gill’s clarity appeals to our reason, love of truth, and common human decency. . .” (Bill Griffin The Catholic Worker)“Lesley Gill’s The School of the Americas is an ambitious book that provides the reader with a thorough analysis of the School of the Americas (SOA), and the effects of the SOA’s training on the trainees and on two Andean Communities.” (Silvia Borzutzky Latin American Research Review)"[B]reathtaking. . . . This book should make one proud to be in the same profession as its author and appalled at the implications of having a U.S. citizenship." (Gavin Smith Journal of Latin American Anthropology)

The School of the America's is a place where Latino American military soldiers and leaders come to train to lead combat missions in their countries. There have been allegations of abuse by some of the graduates who violated human rights of the citizens of their countries. It is a good book as it goes through the history of the School of the America's and why it was formed. Lesly Gilprovides some good editorial evidence of the Human Rights abuses. However, where I do believe her as I have friends from some of those countries she writes about, it may be a long while for these people to be brought to justice if they ever are. There have been some convictions which really indicates the other violations may have happened. For Gil and others who want the school shut down and others brought to justice, it probably won't happen as people are not willing to admit guilt to their actions those in the US and those from the Latin American countries.Lesly Gil is a courageous person for traveling to those countries and having a controversial book published. She should be revered for her work not scorned.

Well written and frightening.

While the book has good information, it could be a little clearer in writing style. The size and quality of the printing is good.

This is an extremely well written study of the military training given to soldiers from all over Latin America. It explains how various ideologies have been used over the past sixty years in order to justify military repression of social movements and the quest for democratic institutions. It examine how the original ideology of containing communism morphed into the war on drugs; and finally into the war on terrorism. This should be required reading for any course on foreign relations or international relations.

Insightful and interesting analysis: Lesley Gill is a good investigator although she could write in a more objective style.

Great book-I am very pleased.

This is a fine expose of the hypocrisy of our military and the horrible human right abuses committed in the name of "Democracy". Our military is the greatest terrorist organization on this globe. Our greatest export is weaponry and war. The "war" on terror and drugs are profit making industries created to steal our tax dollars and foment trouble and political and economic discord in our and other countries. Our perverted justice systems have nothing to do with helping people who get into trouble, They now serve to create "crimes" that fill our for-profit prisons with a cash crop of prisoners for politically tied "investors". If you keep a population in constantly manufactured fear they will back even the most EVIL presidents ie. Nixon, Reagan, Ford, Johnston and the Bushes and their cronies. Now the SOA has turned it's evil sights on the American citizenry. To the police We are no longer citizens we are "civilians" we are no longer men and women but are called males and females. We are not called people we are called "bodies". We are not considered to be humans with inalienable rights, we are now treated like animals that have to be controlled by the police and the military industrial, political establishment. In a "free" country we now have free speech zones and we Do torture. Even Obama with his kidnapping and rendering of suspects to nations that do the torture for us is guilty. Although we all know that the CIA and all the military carry these practices out constantly..Also Excuse me but aren't free speech zones a contradiction in a country that is supposed to be totally free? I am 65 and remember being lied into Viet Nam, and nothing has changed with the tactics of these professional traitors. I hate to say this but all of our wars since WW2 have been wars of empire and the men and women who were sent to terrorize, maim and murder the citizens of Iraq and Afghanistan are at best deluded fools and at worst murdering patsies of the military and it's politically vested interests. They are not heroes they are collaborators in crime. I have no sympathy for any of the injured or dead among them. I hope they and their depraved bosses in the pentagon and congress will have to face real justice someday and pay for their crimes.
