In Bitter Medicine, Dr. Kessler highlights the importance of many of the innate qualities and skills that physicians should develop and possess to be a successful, but more importantly, competent doctor. It's a great read and I feel privileged to have learned first-hand from such an inspirational physician.
At 87, Dr. Kessler still teaches 1st year anatomy at NYU. He is a brilliant teacher and engaging story teller. I feel privileged to have learned from him both in the laboratory and off the page.
Great book! This is coming from a lawyer who is now a first year medical student. Very easy read, with valuable medical liability snipits injected throughout story line. Should be required reading for every medical student.
Under the guise of a highly readable, even enjoyable teaching surgeon's memoirs of memorable cases, "Bitter Medicine" is a timely shout-out that the AMA Emperor may be every bit as naked as we suspected, and worse -- in these days when caveat emptor applies in spades to health care "consumers", "Bitter Medicine" gives patients, potential patients and caretakers an insider's list of Questions to Ask Your Doctors (While you still Can).
Bitter Medicine is a must read for anyone entering the medical field and should also be read and occasionally re-read as a preventative to arrogance. Dr. Kessler wisely tells these gripping tales in terms that non medical people can grasp. His conversational writing style makes the reader feel as though he is part of the class and not just reading an account of what was discussed in class. I couldn't stop reading. I read it straight through, till two in the morning. I kept telling myself, "One more account, and I'll go to bed," but I just couldn't put it down. This is the kind of book that you can't stop thinking about and talking about. This is not only a very gripping read but it is an important message that needed to be told. This book will remain in my collection to be read, re-read, and highly recommended. My hat is off to you, Dr. Kessler. Well done! K. Sladky A doctor's daughter

This book gave me the final bits of data I needed to complete my demand letter to a doctor that has left me with a winged scapula. PIan for life, inability to use my right shoulder and hand ... because he refused to order a simple Xray and make a prompt referral to a competent surgeon. He waited 9 months, by then, it was too late. NEVER accept pain meds without full diagnostics!!
I enjoyed reading this book, it opened my eyes to a great deal that I didn't know about surgery and medicine in general. Dr. Kessler is the type of doctor we all hope to have on our side when something goes wrong with our health.One thing that I came away with is this, if you or a loved one is sick and getting sicker and your doctor is nowhere in sight, raise a fuss to get a second opinion or a specialist.
Bitter Medicine: What I've Learned and Teach about Malpractice Lawsuits (And How to Avoid Them) by Kessler and Trese was a 'binge' read for me that was profoundly compelling and riviting. The realization that symptoms ignored or minimalized can fester into life-ending complications grew with each case study. The organizational principle of progressing methodically through a semester of cadaver dissection with organ-appropriate cautionary tales had a predictabilitythat contrasted with the horrible consequences of procrastination, poor judgements, and preventable errors. The truths of this book applied, of course, to the practice of medicine but there were also inescapable warnings to all on heeding the basics of conducting our own lives. This book was so much more than I expected it to be. Bravo!
