About the Author
Gary Chandler grew up in a small ski town south of Lake Tahoe, California. He earned his bachelor's degree at UC Berkeley, and also studied abroad in Mexico City and Oaxaca. I bought this guide to plan a trip to Tulum in May 2017, mostly because of the recent publication date. As a first time visitor, I found the descriptions laid out here did not adequately prepare me for the reality I encountered. I am not referring to price changes and restaurant closures, which are to be expected. Rather, I found that the overall presentation and layout could have provided better guidance for trip planning.First of all, as Tulum does not have an international airport, it would have been nice to have some description of the towns and sights along the drive down from Cancun. I think it is fair to say that most people who visit Chichen Itza do so from Cancun, so dedicating a major portion of this small guide to that site seems puzzling, aside from serving as page filler. There are plenty of Mayan ruins and things to do within the immediate Tulum area. I would have preferred more in-depth information on these than far-flung destinations such as CI and Valladolid. For me, the most enthralling experience of all was the exploration of surrounding cenotes, an extensive system of crystal clear limestone springs. An entire chapter could easily have been devoted to them, but here they are little more than footnotes.More importantly, I came away with a much different picture of the area than the one presented here. Tulum itself is a dusty, dumpy town built along a highway, not conveniently located to the beach zone that is featured in most photos of the area. Its only attribute is lower prices. As for the beach, although much more scenic if one overlooks the ubiquitous seaweed, I was not expecting the literally wall-to-wall development. The nature reserve that is presented as an adjacent oasis of pristine shoreline is accessible only via the long, crowded gauntlet of the hotel zone which then becomes a narrow, viewless jungle road lined with private property for miles before even a glimpse of ocean or lagoon appears.The writing here is clear, but if it had evoked the scene in more detail, it could have made a real difference to my trip planning. I found the Lonely Planet guide to Yucatan better organized and more helpful. Hint: to find what you think you're looking for in Tulum, go beyond it.
Excellent guide book (the most useful one I have purchased to-date in fact). Great details, very helpful and used it throughout our entire trip. Highly recommended for those traveling to Tulum!Only update it needs is that Quintana Roo (where Tulum is located) has changed to a different time zone than the rest of the Yucantan - so when you are traveling to Valladolid or Chichen Itza, be sure to check what time it is where you are going. Tulum is now in EST - however does not practice daylight savings.
Quite good, but could have been better with less emphasis on torrid night life, which is of less interest to older travelers, and more attention to details such as parking issues, distances and the like.
IT WAS A CHRISTMAS PRESENT. THE PERSON I GAVE IT TO LIKED IT.
Purchased this book and found that much of the information is not up to date. Contains good info about the history of the area but I didn't find it very helpful for travel planning.
