I recently discovered the Human Body Detective Series and absolutely love it! My 3 year old loves it and learns much more from the books than I thought she would. My 7 year old loves them! My husband and I also find them interesting and educational. (A lot of adults probably forget that red blood cells are called erythrocytes. So, this series will teach parents a lot too.) In "A Heart Pumping Adventure", the little girls float through the blood stream on a red blood cell "raft" and see first hand how their father's lack of exercise and diet of bacon and cheeseburgers is causing "yellow gooey stuff" to build up on his blood vessel walls. The book is exciting with a few narrow escapes but it is not scary. This book is jam packed with information about the circulatory system and healthy eating. After the story, there is a section with more information about the circulatory syster, a diagram of the heart, a glossary, directions on how to take your pulse, and some jokes. "Why is the artichoke the most loving vegetable? Because it has a heart." I highly recommend this book and the others in the series for all children (and their parents will learn a lot too.)
My boys really love these adventure books. It's fun to sit and read them aloud with each other. Not only do we have quality family time but they are also learning something. They get to learn how their body works and why it's important to take care of it. Something that is hard in this fast food, video game driven world.My 9 year old is able to read these books on his own, with a little help on some of the 'technical' words. My 7 year old needs a bit of help and the book is a tad long for him to read on his own without getting frustrated. But as a read aloud it's the perfect length with just the right amount of adventure to keep everyone's attention.I'd say these books would be great for homeschool or a teacher's classroom. They'd also make for good book for reading outside of a school setting.
I'm not going to repeat what everyone else wrote, just add to the star-count. I was very impressed, not only with the story itself which is admittedly reminiscent of the Magic Schoolbus stories, but with the details all the way through (avoiding fluff), and the amazing amount of post-story add-ons. It's not often the dessert course of the book even appears, much less astounds as much as the main dish. Kudos to the author!

The books starts out stating, basically, that eggs and bacon are unhealthy for you. I encourage others to do their own research into this, for eggs and bacon are not the culprit. Read In Defense of Food and you will see that those regions who don't have heart disease were not missing fatty, high in cholesterol foods...they were missing SUGAR. Too bad, I was looking forward to using this in my curriculum for my daughter.

The Human Body Detectives is an award winning children's book series by Dr. Heather Manley that follows two children, Merrin and Pearl, through their adventures in the different systems inside the human body to solve health mysteries. The intent behind this series is to inspire our kids to be proactive in taking care of their bodies and health. Dr. Heather developed these books to give a fresh approach to children on learning about the human body. She felt that her children's classroom studies on the different systems in the body were not giving sufficient basic background information for building a solid knowledge foundation and set out to develop her own. As a mother who has heart disease in my family, I was particularly interested in reviewing the book of Merrin and Pearl's adventure through the circulatory system.A Heart Pumping Adventure is a fantastic children's book with lots of full color pictures of Merrin and Pearl's exploration through our body's circulatory system and the importance of keeping it healthy. It is a great way to teach kids about caring for their bodies and it is packed with great information on how to be proactive in their personal wellness. There is a lot of fun things about this book, such as a picture of a (anatomically correct) heart instead of the word `heart' throughout the text. I absolutely love all the wonderful reference pages at the back of the book where kids can learn more about the circulatory system. I was really pleased with the section on healthy eating and exercise tips as well as a glossary, tips of how to take your pulse and a diagram of the heart. Dr. Heather even incorporates fun and silly jokes for kids in a section called `Laugh Your Heart Out'. The other two books in the series on the Digestive and Immune System are available through eBooks and iPhone/iPad apps and Dr. Heather is working on creating the apps for A Heart Pumping Adventure. For additional learning, there is an elementary curriculum for each book in the series available through the Human Body Detectives website.
