Bernard-Henri Lévy is a philosopher, journalist, activist, and filmmaker. Among his dozens of books are American Vertigo, Barbarism with a Human Face, and Who Killed Daniel Pearl? His writing has appeared in a wide range of publications throughout Europe and the United States. His films include the documentaries Bosna! and A Day in the Death of Sarajevo. Lévy is co-founder of the antiracist group SOS Racisme and has served on diplomatic missions for the French government.

This work ranged from the personal to the very general in a context which lacked form and scholarly rigor too often for my taste. Many points were well taken and, indeed, substantiated, but on the whole, the work was not engaging on many levels, particularly its prose. I think a good editor would have helped tremendously to bring more focus to a work that I had expected to be better. Having seen M. Levy on PBS numerous times, I looked forward to this book. It is definitely worth reading, however, as M. Levy always touches on points which need consideration and discussion and reflect his deep insights, some of which are controversial in certain circles.
As a whole I did not think it lived to my expectation of understanding of Jewidism. Authore, although highly intellect, seems like is engaged in an orgy of self adulation and Jewish race propeganda. For all the grips of bad treatment of Jews through Europe and elsewhere he never mentioned anything of israeli's treatment of occupied land of Palestinians and constant expansion of settellets in stolen lands. Looks like the choosen people given themselves permission to become nazis.
Maybe it's just over my head, but I had a hard time following Levy's lines of thought. Some parts were engrossing, like the discussion of Jonah and the discussion of anti-zionism/anti-semitisim, but it doesn't really cohere over the course of the whole book. After reading I'm still left wondering what is the genius of Judaism.
The pretension was disquieting.

Top-notch book for Jews and non-Jews alike, although anti-Semites will resent the implication that we are bragging about being smart. Oh well, I've heard this all my life.
This book may reflect a very timely topic but it is impossible to read. Sentences are often run on paragraph long and fundamentally unintelligible. Someone should have edited it.
Interesting book, but very difficult to get through. Need a religious expert to understand better.
