I chose to rated this book 1 Star because I read Howard Clarks "Zebra Killings," after a 30 year police veteran recommended it to me. At the end of Howard's chapters he mentioned what was happening to all the victims who survived. So the reason I even bought this book was to see if any new information has arisen in the last 20+ years on the killers and the victims. Sadly this book was an utter disappointment. The Author should have chosen a different title as he really wasn't interested in talking about the Zebra Murders, but rather racism that had personally affected him while on the SFPD. Being the first Black Police Chief of the SFPD and having lived during a dark time for race relations in America I am sure he witnessed a lot, and that his story would have been a riveting one. But all this book was about was his lawsuit with the Department. Nothing new was added about the case, he didn't mention any of the victims and what later happened to them. Buy Clark Howards book if you want to know about the case and the investigative procedures that were used to solve it.
Don't waste your time with this book. Read the other book entitled "Zebra." This book is about personnel disputes within the police department, and its leading protagonists had little to do with investigating the Zebra killings.
more than half the book focused o n the racism the author expiereinced in the SFPD and the rest was about the zebra killings.too bad cause the little amount that should have been the focus of the book was a page turner!

Police chief has poor memory. He thought he solved the case. Vanity book.
Looks like I got the wrong book. This one's more concerned w/ White racism's psychological damage to Blacks than on describing an organized outbreak of Black terrorism against Whites. The authors (Black detective Sanders and Hollywood writer Cohen) want us to think No White Racism, No Black Terrorism! The idea that Blacks could also be guilty of racism, tho once considered a truism, is currently illegitimate to the minds of liberal writers such as Cohen. So the attempt at racial profiling in the Fillmore ghetto where the NOI temple that spawned the Zebra murderers was located is castigated as outrageous and ineffective. If there were a Klan chapter in a racially-mixed city and its members were suspected of randomly killing Blacks, would profiling Whites around the chapter where the killings had all taken place seem like bad policing to Cohen and company? Probably not because Black Lives Matter.
This book is interesting, but not complete. It does not include all the attacks by the Zebra killers. I felt that it was more of a biography of the SFPD and detective Earl Sanders.
New perspective on terrible crimes and unsung heroes. When the truth comes to light it does not make easy reading. Readers old enough to recall the 70s will understand this book better than the younger generations.
