A broad and insightful look at American Judaism written by arguably one of the most knowledgeable people anywhere on this topic. Kudos to Professor Wertheimer for this well-written, engaging and very informative book.
Sorry I couldn't rate lower than 1 star. This is just insulated self absorbed excuses for the abject failure of SINagogue delivery system of Judaism where the cup is more important than the coffee (Judaism). As a Jew myself, if I didn't know better this pompousity with a myriad of self congratulatory back slapping could be called The Deep Professional Judaism state. Will to meaning is Judaic - he rails against it as outside In is more important to Wertheimer than INside out. He prefers it seems the abject failure of the sage on the stage Rabbi than a guide by the side - maybe because the Synagogue economic model does not have the capacity to ignite let alone re-ignite personalized meaning IN one's life thru Judaic connection (Tzavta) which is so thirsted by Jews. He even uses a renaming of the will to meaning (Frankel) to personalism (to diminish this seeking). Mao Tse Tung had one thing right - send the professors every 7 years or so into the fields with the peasants - so they get off their elitism looking down their nose attitudes - a suggestion for Wertheimer instead of speaking to those just in the echo chamber.
