It was an easy decision for me to purchase the audible version of Ted Talks Storytelling; 23 Storytelling Techniques from the Best Ted Talks by Akash Karia because I had purchased the kindle version of this book on November 6, 2016. Akash Karia explains why making a speech or talk into a storytelling format creates a more complex and stimulating speech. Karia also helpfully explains why conflict can make a story more exhilarating to read andor listen to (he cites the Titanic movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet other actors/actresses etc. as how the conflict made the film more interesting). This was important for me to hear in this audible version because it helped me feel guilt-free about all of the times I have used conflict in my freestyle story writing when I blog (however, due to karmic andor spiritual reasons I strive to change names, locations, andor physical locations due to my increased intuitive/logic awareness that more people than I may have initially realized view my freestyle stories online as each day passes). I even unexpectedly came across an online article less than 18 hours ago that featured an online commenter who had a similar name to one of the characters that I used from an online name generator for one of my recent freestyle stories who had overcame a little challenge to triumph over.
Total waste of time and money, this is a poorly written book with inane advice. Here's a typical sentence: "The Pursuit of Happyness is a positive-message story because it shares with the audience a positive message." Really, how enlightening! This is not even a book but a self-published pamphlet with obvious advice like "tell a story." Even though it's short, the author repeats the same comments in summaries at the end of each chapter then goes back to the same advice and excerpts over and over. The book is riddled with typos; it looks like a book report an 11th-grader slapped together in an hour - and didn't edit or proofread. And many of his 23 techniques aren't techniques at all, they're just imbecilic comments like: "Stories are powerful because people are hard-wired to listen to stories." That's an observation, not a technique.I really don't understand the positive reviews, maybe this author and his friends/colleagues bought the book so they could review it. Note how brief most of the positive reviews are, that could suggest they're fraudulent.Let me save you $7 and the hour it might take to read this the book. Here it is in a nutshell: Good talks tell stories, have a good opening line and conflict in the story, make it personal, show rather than tell, evoke all five senses, use specific details, have a moment that changes a character which Karia calls the "spark" and end with a takeaway. That's it.Even if this book were better written and edited, its central premise is flawed: yes good storytelling is important for TED talks but you also need something novel or original to say - there has to be a larger meaning. TED isn't just about telling stories; it's about helping people to see the world in new ways with provocative ideas. Which were sadly lacking in this flimsy book. Fortunately I also read Chris Anderson's recent TED book which was much more useful.
Updated review: the 5 star reviews must be from friends, certainly not from anyone who has opened and read this "book" Each chapter of this pamphlet has the same format: a bunch of dumb questions, 2-3 pages of stuff, and a wrap-up if your reading comprehension skills are too weak to pick up what was said in the pages of stuff. Not worth the $7.99, and I will be donating it to Goodwill. I do not recommend this "book," and would not purchase it again.============================================================================================Original review:This is really like a long pamphlet, with the book material itself being 47 pages. Of course there is more online, as the author wants to harvest your email address. Thus far I'm not impressed. When I finish, I will update this review if it is warranted.
I am a speech coach at my local high school. This book is short enough for attention span of students. It emphasizes the key elements in storytelling in simple, straightforward language and is illustrated with solid examples. I am going to use it as a resource in my program.
This book is very easy to understand and full of succinct points. It really helped me to prepare my talk to inspire my audience. Thank you Akash.
We all have a message - the difficulty is getting it across to the people we can help. This book shows how to get that message across and make it stick. A reliable solution to the problem most of us don't even realise we have.
A great, short outline on how to tell a story in a powerful way. Everyone planning on doing a speech, or simply trying to make a point to one or more people, should read this booklet.
Good insights on the art of public speaking. I appreciate Karia's approach and how his insights reformed my approach to speech writing.
It was of great help to improve my career.
